Chatbot or live chat: what your website actually needs
A live chat is as good as whoever has time right now. A chatbot is as good as its knowledge. For most small businesses the answer is neither on its own, but a clear handover between the two.
What you get
- An assessment of which route fits your business
- AI for the questions that repeat
- A handover to a person with every detail
- Optionally a pointer to WhatsApp or phone instead
- A chat that does not go silent after hours
- Live chat wins
- At advice, exceptions, negotiation
- Chatbot wins
- At repetition and outside working hours
- What decides it
- The handover between the two
- With GoSupportIt
- Both in one chat, set per channel
What live chat does well, and where it fails
A person in the chat is hard to beat when it comes to advice. They hear what the customer actually means, can make an exception, explain a price and follow up with an offer at the right moment. For products where every enquiry is different, that remains the best route.
The problem is not quality, it is availability. A live chat needs someone who has time right now. In a small business that is the same person who is also serving, advising or sitting in a meeting. Everyone knows the result: a chat window saying "We will be right with you", and nobody comes. After hours it turns into a form dressed up as a chat.
On top of that, many chat messages are questions whose answer is already on the website. Opening hours, prices, delivery times. Interrupting a person for those is expensive.
What an AI chatbot does well, and where it must stop
An AI has exactly the strength live chat lacks: it is always there, at 11 pm and on Sundays too, and it does not get impatient at the twentieth identical question. Whatever is in its knowledge, it answers at once.
Its weakness is the flip side. It knows only what is written down, and it must not decide anything a person should decide. A chatbot that does not accept that makes up answers or goes round in circles until the customer gives up. A good chatbot recognises that point and hands over before it gets embarrassing.
The comparison in four points
Whoever has only one of the two pays at one of these points. The question is where it costs you least.
Availability
Live chat: only when someone has time. Chatbot: always, for everything it knows.
Advice and exceptions
Live chat: clearly ahead. Chatbot: collects the details and hands over.
Repeated questions
Live chat: costs time every time. Chatbot: answers them without interrupting anyone.
Risk of mistakes
Live chat: human errors, but rarely invented ones. Chatbot: only as good as its knowledge, so it needs fixed rules.
The handover decides it, not the technology
In GoSupportIt it is one chat, not two. The AI answers first. When it notices a decision is needed, it tells the customer it is passing things on, asks for a name and contact and puts the request with everything collected in front of you. You take over in the same chat or reply by email, and with one click you hand the conversation back to the AI when it is routine again.
For businesses that do not want to continue chats themselves, there is a third option: the AI then points to WhatsApp, phone or email instead of handing over. Which option fits depends less on the software than on who at your place has time when. We clear that up before the setup.

This runs on GoSupportIt
GoSupportIt is a product of Digital Vibes GmbH, which is us. The chat on this website runs on it too. We set it up for you and tune it.
- Website chat, contact form, Gmail and API in one inbox
- Per channel: AI off, suggest or autopilot
- Whatever needs a decision lands with you, details included

When the chat should lead to WhatsApp
Many small businesses would rather answer personal questions on WhatsApp anyway. Then the chat is the entry point and WhatsApp is where the conversation continues. We set up both and make sure the website answers the questions before they are even asked.
AI Customer Support
Website chat, contact form and Gmail in one inbox. The AI answers or suggests, you decide. We set it up.

No. The AI answers what it can, and whatever needs you lands in the inbox and reaches you as a notification. You look in when you have time, and by then the customer has already been told that someone will get back to them.
Yes. As soon as you reply, the AI stays out. And when the conversation is back to routine questions, you hand it back with one button.
When someone is there, yes. When not, a chat without a reply is the least personal thing a website can offer. With the handover you get both: an instant answer to simple questions and you in person where it counts.
